Tempeh Fakin’ Bacon
I don’t know about you buy I love the package Fakin’ Bacon you can buy at the natural food store made from tempeh. But it is SO expensive and a little too salty for my taste, so I decided to make my own. This way I can save money and use only the highest quality pure ingredients. This is a snap to make and is delicious! I know many of you are new to tempeh and loved my Curry “Chicken” Salad recipe. Hope you enjoy this one too!
This is great for breakfast, served on a sandwich or in a pita, great chopped up on a salad or in a casserole!
Tempeh Fakin’ Bacon
3 to 4 servings
8 ounce package of tempeh
1/4 cup tamari
1 tablespoon liquid smoke
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil (optional)
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon paprika
Dash of black pepper
Directions:
Slice tempeh in thin slices. Combine all marinade ingredients inside a Pyrex dish large enough to fit slices of tempeh in one single layer. Coat each piece of tempeh and marinate for 1 hour turning once. Drain most of the marinade from the tempeh and save leaving a little at the bottom of the pan.
Bake for 30-35 minutes at 375 degrees F turning once halfway through. If it looks dry at the halfway point add a touch of the marinade to the pan.
Scrumptious! I will be trying this soon. I have 2 packages of that exact tempeh in the fridge waiting! Your curry chicken salad recipe sounds awesome too.
Take it from me, this is delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe : )
Her curry tempeh recipe IS awesome! This looks good too! Keep the yummy recipes coming. 🙂
Aww thanks Morgan! Glad you enjoyed it!
Yummy!! Hits the spot
These are in the oven right now!! Yum yum!
OMG! Christy! What a treat! Finally got to have some fun in the kitchen today. Made this and it was AMAZING!
Yay! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
This looks like a great recipe. I tried making a similar tempeh bacon recipe and couldn’t get it thin enough without it falling to pieces. I want to try your marinade (I appreciate you saying it’s not so salty!) — any tips on how to slice the tempeh?
I don’t slice it that thin, it’s okay if it’s about 1 cm, not as thin as the packaged kind.
This looks great – can't wait to try it!
Her girl! I was wondering what brand of liquid smoke you use for this recipe?
Can't wait to make it!
Megan
Most liquid smoke you get from a natural food store is going to be vegan. The one I use is colgin brand.
Thanks! There is no health food store where I am so I wanted to place an order online! I found the brand and will make the recipe soon. Thanks again.
I tried this Fakin’ Bacon and it is really scrumptious! I made some cinnamon energy bars and have those with my bacon for breakfast.
Yum!!!
Yum, great idea! I used to dislike tempeh until I discovered a local producer and the fresh, homemade stuff is GREAT! Bet it would be great like this!
I made some on my own yesterday. Then tried again today with more seasonings and then I find this now! 😆 Will try this on my next batch. Been getting tempeh in bulk because of C19 & can’t find it in stores.
I will be using coconut amino‘s to cut the sodium down even more. Need to for my new heart condition.
