BabyCakes LA

I made the trip Downtown to check out the newest vegan bakery in town. BabyCakes has been rockin’ over in NYC for some time now and has graced us with their presence. I must say, first off, that having a location Downtown does not seem like a good idea. It’s very difficult to park nearby without paying an arm and a leg (don’t even try to go 3-7pm when the meters are unavailable for rush hour) and it can get shady down there after 6. If you can deal with this then you won’t be disappointed by the yummies that await inside.

I went with my best friend and her mom who was visiting from Seattle, who has never had a vegan pastry, much less one that is gluten-free and sweetened with unrefined sugar. She got the Red Velvet Cupcake and she was floored at how delicious it was. She could not believe that it was vegan or “healthy”.

I spent a ton of money (this place isn’t cheap, but it’s high quality so oh well) and got some amazing things. Firstly, I tried the Chocolate Brownie bites while I was driving home in traffic (sorry no photo). The texture and moisture level was great but not as chocolaty as I would have liked. Secondly, I had the Carrot Cupcake, which I shared with my roommate who is gluten-intolerant. With both liked it, especially the frosting, but the cupcake part was a bit dry.

Moving on to the Cookie Sandwich, which was suggested to me from @VeganEvents on Twitter. Boy was he right! This thing is so rich and dreamy, but eat it fairly quickly or it will melt on you. Next, was the Skinny Bun, which I had the next morning and warmed in the toaster oven. I don’t think that name has anything to do with the fat, calories, or sugar content though. Nothing skinny about this bun. Rich and sweet, thicker dough than most fluffy buns I’ve had before, a little too much cinnamon for me, but I love the addition of raisins inside.

I’m sure my macrobiotic teachers are having a heart attack seeing all the sweets I’ve been eating this past week!  Time for some remedy drinks.

BabyCakes gluten-free pastries did not disappoint. I like that most of them are sweetened with agave and the gluten-free option is a major plus. LA is lucky to have them and the cute girls in pinstripes can stay too.

What a cute name, Baby Cakes. Wow, your Mom is from Seattle. I lived in Portland, OR, for 10 years and Seattle was definitely a place I loved to visit!
