My new favorite way to make tofu: marinated and grilled

Folks, I have discovered a way to make tofu that knocks my socks off. It’s easy, fast, not rocket science, and I’m really surprised I haven’t been making it this way all along! Marinate and grilled baby!

Since we don’t have a grill here I’m using the grill pan to do this. Personally I like this better than a grill. I don’t have to go outside and get sweaty and eaten by mosquitos. I guess this is the girly way of grilling lol. I feel like it’s better to lightly brush oil onto the grill pan to prevent the marinated tofu from sticking. You could try it without the oil but I bet the tofu will stick.

All I did was marinate it in this special spice blend that I got from the Savory Spice Shop called Rogan Josh. I’ve become obsessed with spice blends and they have SO MANY already mixed, which takes out all the work. Rogan Josh has paprika, garlic, ginger, coriander, cumin, turmeric, cayenne, Saigon cinnamon, cardamom, and clove. Can you say HEAVEN??

What are some delicious spice blends that you use regularly? Do you make your own?

Tofu Grilled

Taste of India Grilled Tofu

About 1/2 container of extra firm tofu

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon tamari

2 teaspoons Rogan Josh spice blend

Preparation

Cut tofu into four equal pieces about 1/2 cm thick. Whisk together the vinegar, tamari, and spices in a 8×8 glass dish. Marinate tofu for about 2-3 hours, flipping each piece occasionally. Heat up grill pan and coat with oil. Lay tofu down on grill pan and cook until grill marks are seen. I like to take a pot lid and press down lightly on the tofu to help it along.

Lemon pepper TofuThis next recipe comes from Jamey who shared his Smoky Eggplant with us earlier this week. He obviously can’t get enough of his grill and has found his own love of marinated and grilled tofu.

Lemon-Pepper Tofu

1 block of firm tofu

Juice of 1 lemon

1 tablespoon oil

1 tablespoon champagne vinegar

1 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Preparation

 

Cut pressed and drained tofu into 1/2″ pieces. Combine remaining ingredients and pour into a shallow pan. Place cut tofu into mixture and let sit for 30 minutes in refrigerator, turning them over halfway through. Grill tofu on medium-low grill for about 3-5 minutes on each side, or until grill hatch-marks form (be sure not to overcook, or tofu will dry out).

  1. Admittedly, as much as I love tofu, never really grilled it before.  I'm missing my George Foreman grill (loved grilling veggies on that grill).  My kids love tofu so much & they love it plain, so I guess I've never had reason to deviate, but this recipe looks flavorful & delicious.
